Tisdale Adult Basic Education students hosted a Literacy event event this week welcoming over 110 kids ages 3-5.  The preschoolers participated in activities including painting, making playdough, beading, math activities, yoga, story telling and making hand drums.  The days events began with drummers and dancers from Kinistin Saulteaux Nation and ended with a round dance including all those who participated.

Children came from Tisdale Elementary School Pre-kindergarten, Jack and Jill Preschool, the Tisdale Recplex Daycare, Tiny Tornadoes Daycare and the Little Explorers Day Care.  Families also participated through NEECIP as well as children from Kinistin and Yellow Quill Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten.

Reviews from people leaving the event were all extremely positive and the children leaving were all very excited yet amazingly patient and polite while receiving their participant bags.  The bags included a newsletter about family literacy, booklets on family literacy from the Saskatchewan Literacy Network, a classic children book, and an assortment of activities that families can play together with, such as sidewalk chalk, crayons, playdough and bubbles.  The newsletter also included a write up about the various activities that the children participated in.

Lori Constant, Adult Basic Education Instructor responsible for the project says, “I am so proud of my students for planning, organizing, and implementing our Literacy Event.  Throughout this process, they have been engaged, open, willing to learn, and willing to try new things.  They have grown tremendously in terms of leadership, teamwork, and confidence this year.  They are amazing, wonderful students who give me 100% every day and I could not be any prouder of them!”

The Family Literacy Day event was sponsored by a Saskatchewan Community Literacy Fund Grant and applied for in partnership with NE Newcomer Services and NEECIP.
