KRG: Celebration of the 15th Anniversary of the parc national des Pingualuit
July 17, 2019- On July 11 2019, local residents of Kangiqsujuaq were given an amazing opportunity to visit the Pingualuit national park during its 15th anniversary.
Some Nunavik Parks officials arrived from Kuujjuaq to Kangiqsujuaq by an air charter plane. They were given a tour of the village and of the park’s Interpretation Center.
Organizers held an opening ceremony welcoming participants to the village. They opened the ceremony with a traditional qulliq often used for ceremonies and for welcoming people. They also talked about the Inuit tradition, which is very important to their culture. Later that morning, participants took a guided tour by plane of the Pingualuit Park to view the world-renowned crater, considered by many as an incredible site.
Participants took part in a presentation about how the park began. The community was at the forefront in requesting that the crater become a protected national park. It named the park using an Inuktitut term meaning ‘’looks like many lumps’’.
The park guides also explained the various activities that take place around the park such as kayaking, fishing and hiking. They are hoping to attract more tourists for these activities.
