Without condoning the desecration of monuments, there toppling of the Sir John A. Macdonald statue over the weekend does shine a light on important issues

If the anti-racism protesters who toppled the monument to former prime minister Sir John A. Macdonald in Montreal’s Place du Canada this weekend wanted attention, their stunt accomplished that goal.

Well, mostly. There is much condemnation of the desecration of the city’s heritage. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it vandalism. Premier François Legault called it “unacceptable” and vowed to put Macdonald back. Mayor Valérie Plante said such acts must not be tolerated. A police investigation has been launched and a debate is underway about what to do with old Macdonald next.
