(Kahnawake – 14, Kenténha/October 2021) The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to offer its sincerest condolences to the family, friends and former colleagues of Edward J. Cross, who passed away earlier this week.

Mr. Cross had a profound effect on the community as an educator. During the formative years of the Kahnawà:ke education system, his leadership and skill in curriculum development was an essential as the community moved away from the Indian Day School regime to the Kahnawà:ke-run system we know today. He will be forever remembered as an architect and pioneer, and for his dedication to the education of our children. Under his watch, literally thousands of students graduated from a school system that reflects the needs of the community, rather than the needs of the government.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at the Poissant & Deer Funeral Home beginning at 12pm noon on Sunday. The funeral will be held at 11am on Monday at the St. Francis Xavier Mission. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Kateri Memorial Foundation.

Though he was a great educator, to those closest to him he’ll be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. While his journey on earth has come to a close, his legacy shall remain. May he rest in peace.
