Minister Geoffrey Kelley highlights the commitment of 11 officers of Aboriginal police forces

Québec, June 10, 2015 – On behalf of the Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Safety, Mrs. Lise Thériault, Mr. Geoffrey Kelley, the minister for Aboriginal Affairs today underscored the extraordinary commitment of police officers from several Aboriginal police forces during a medal awards ceremony for police officers who have served for 15 or 20 years in Aboriginal communities.

“The police officers we honour today are inspired by an undeniable wish to serve their community and ensure their fellow citizens live in a safe environment. They are distinguished by their professionalism, respect and altruism, and highly deserve this tribute in front of their loved ones and colleagues”, Minister Kelley declared.

“Choosing a career as a police officer means choosing a profession that requires many sacrifices and unforeseeable interactions. The officers we pay tribute to today all have a unique story, but they share human qualities which guide them in their important work. They are, without doubt, inspiring examples for young police officers who work alongside them daily and who benefit from their expertise and experience,” Minister Thériault stated.

This year, the medal for community service, awarded by the Sûreté du Québec, was given to six police officers in recognition of their 15 years of involvement and service to Aboriginal communities.

The medal for distinguished service, awarded by the Governor General of Canada, was given to five police officers who distinguished themselves through their 20 years of exemplary service, good conduct, dedication and effectiveness.

The ceremony took place at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel in Québec, on the occasion of the seventh conference of Quebec Aboriginal police chiefs.
