She will have access to the vast collections, research sites and scholarly expertise of the world’s largest museum and research complex.

Skawennati is off to the Smithsonian.

The Montreal-based Mohawk artist is one of the 2020 Smithsonian Artist Research Fellows. As such, she will receive a travel grant to visit the esteemed institution, which is the world’s largest museum and research complex, and have access to its vast collections, research sites and scholarly expertise for a one- to two-month period.

“The Smithsonian Institution is huge, in so many ways,” Skawennati said Thursday. “It’s physically huge, with collections of artifacts from many different First Nations. For me, this represents another step on a journey I’m taking, looking into my and our heritage.”
