Premier François Legault admitted the National Assembly sent the wrong message last week during debates over systemic racism in Quebec.

Premier François Legault has taken responsibility for last week’s heated debates over systemic racism at the National Assembly, adding that he should have shown more “compassion and solidarity” toward Indigenous people.

In a message posted to his Facebook account on Monday, Legault acknowledged last week wasn’t the right time for partisan debates to overshadow the issues Indigenous people continue to face in Quebec.

“I am well aware that in the National Assembly last week, we did not send the message of compassion and solidarity that the situation demands of us. I include myself in this and I take my share of the responsibility,” Legault wrote on Monday.
