(Kahnawake – 29, Seskehkó:wa/September 2023) The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Ratsénhaienhs Cody Diabo will be participating in “Indigenous Peoples, Climate Justice & Action Research in the Americas: Exchanging Knowledge and Building Alliances for Territories of Life” at McGill University in Montreal. Some events began last night (Thursday) as detailed below.

The aim of the event is to facilitate knowledge exchange among and between Indigenous Peoples and their allies in the Americas on political, legal, and other strategies towards climate justice, grounded in Indigenous perspectives. Participants will immerse in discussion around better-identifying lessons learned on ethical participatory action research approaches and methodologies, while creating dynamic spaces for deeper relationships and alliance building.

“This is a great opportunity to highlight the work Kahnawà:ke, and our Environment Protection Office are doing to improve our habitats. Infrastructure was imposed on us, but we are resilient as a community and have adapted to our surroundings,” said Ratsénhaienhs Cody Diabo

The event, which runs until Monday, will include:

  • A Welcome Dinner and Introduction of participants (Thursday 6pm to 9pm)
  • Bus tour of Kahnawà:ke, tour of the Kahnawà:ke Language and Cultural Center, tour of the Recreation Bay (Friday 10am to 4pm)
  • Retreat Day 1 – outdoor Opening Ceremony on Mount Royal (Saturday 9am to 10:15am)
  • Workshop at Thompson House (Saturday & Sunday)
  • Hybrid Policy Roundtable Discussions (Monday – Thompson House)

Ratsénhaienhs Cody Diabo will moderate a panel discussion on Saturday, which will include speakers from the Indigenous Community, representatives from the Government of Canada, Adrian di Giovanni (IRDC), and Fransico Cali Tzay, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
