The FNEC, La Boîte Rouge VIF and CREO Join Forces to Align Provincial Curriculum with Indigenous Realities

The First Nations Education Council (FNEC) is proud to announce a new partnership with La Boîte Rouge VIF and CREO for the development of relevant Indigenous-based learning material for all schools across Quebec.

This comes on the heels of the Quebec government’s $19.4 million investment to give Indigenous history and perspectives their rightful place in provincial school programming through the implementation of three measures targeting direct student support, instructional material, and program review.

The FNEC’s involvement on the Provincial Panel on Indigenous Student Success has made Indigenous curriculum development and ongoing provincial program reform a priority. This is in keeping with the Viens Commission’s call for action No. 21 to “further enrich the Québec curriculum by introducing a fair and representative portrait of Québec First Nations and Inuit history, working with Indigenous authorities,” and No. 22 to “introduce concepts related to Indigenous history and culture as early as possible in the school curriculum.” The overarching goal is to foster student retention and academic success.

Based on previous successful collaborations, the FNEC has given La Boîte Rouge VIF and CREO a joint mandate to consult First Nations on how promoting Indigenous cultures and perspectives in the provincial school system could be improved.

La Boîte Rouge VIF will be conducting needs analyses, producing reports, and making recommendations on integrating First Nations content in the curriculum as part of ongoing improvement and raising awareness of the reality of First Nations.

A digital platform will also be developed with CREO to produce authentic material and give schools across the province access to existing content. This digital platform will hopefully engage educators in promoting Indigenous perspectives in the provincial curriculum.

La Boîte Rouge VIF has already begun a survey of the Indigenous and non-Indigenous education community in Quebec, and has set up an Indigenous-led steering committee to guide the work with a preliminary meeting on September 16th.

This committee is composed of:

  • Lisette Petiquay, director, education, language, and culture for the Conseil de la Nation Atikamekw (CNA);
  • Médérik Sioui, historian and consultant;
  • Claudie Robertson, curriculum developer for the student services in Mashteuiatsh;
  • Maureen Papatie, assistant director of the Amikobi Elementary School and committee member of the language instruction program of Lac Simon;
  • Shipiss Michel-McKenzie, education consultant for Institut Tshakapesh.
